Allan Stewart and Margaret Cumming in Aulich

The earliest baptism in the Fortingall OPR is that of a child to Callin Campbell in 1743, and the earliest mention of a Cummin(g) baptism is in 1749. So it is not surprising that the birth date of Margaret Cumming is unknown. She probably was born in Fortingall parish, around 1740.

Allan Stewart and Margaret Cumming, both in Aulich in this parish were lawfully booked in order to marriage.

18th July 1779, Fortingall OPR

The death certificate of John Stewart, in 1857, states that his father Allan Stewart was a miller, but James Stobie's map of Perthshire (1783) does not show a mill at Aulich. The settlement of Aulich seems to have rivalled Kinloch in its population, at this time.

Alexander Stewart and Elizabeth McGregor in Puslinch, Ontario

1st March 1805, Fortingall OPR
Alexander Stewart in Craganour and Elizabeth McGregor in Aulich (gave up their names to be proclaimed in order to marriage)

The ScotlandsPeople web-site indexes the marriage as 1804, but this is an error. Ryk Brown's website showing the Stewart families in Puslinch, Wellington Co. Ontario, lists the children of Alexander Stewart and Elizabeth McGregor, starting with Allan Stewart, b ~1803 and Margaret, b ~1805, both at Loch Rannoch. This suggests that Elizabeth McGregor was Alexander Stewart's second wife. There is no trace of Allan Stewart's baptism in the Fortingall OPR, but does contain the marriage of Margaret Stewart to John McDiarmid in 1833.

19th May 1833, Fortingall OPR
John McDiarmid in Ardlarich and Margaret Stewart in Killichonan, both in this parish, gave up their names (to be proclaimed in order to marriage)

The marriage must have taken place just months before Duncan McDiarmid's large family emigrated, taking Margaret's brother Allan with them.

Alexander Stewart and Elizabeth McGregor were still living in Killichonan, Rannoch, at the time of the 1841 census.

Dwelling Name Age Occupation Birthplace
Killichonan (39) Alexander Stewart 65y weaver Perthshire
Elizabeth Stewart 55y Perthshire
Donald Stewart 30y ag. labourer Perthshire

The rest of the family are said to have joined them over the next few years. Donald, his wife Catherine Cameron, and his brother Duncan arrived in 1843, followed by John and May (Marjory) in 1844. It is said that the last to arrive were Hugh, Janet and Helen, accompanied by their parents, Alexander Stewart and Elizabeth McGregor, in 1854. However, if Alexander Stewart died at the end of February 1854, the family group probably had emigrated the previous year.

Alexander Stewart and Elizabeth McGregor have a memorial stone in the Crown Cemetery, Morriston, Wellington Co. Ontario.

John Stewart and Catherine Campbell in Finnart

The death certificate of Ann Stewart or Gloag, the daughter of John Stewart, gives the name of John's wife as Catherine Cameron, however this in incorrect. The 1841 census shows her name as Catherine but only uses her married surname. The same census also lists Ann Stewart and Donald Stewart who, by their ages, are adult children. The estimated dates of birth match the recorded baptisms in the Fortingall OPR of Ann Stewart and Donald Stewart, the children of John Stewart and Catherine Campbell, who were living at Finnart. This once again matches the 1841 census data. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a record of their marriage banns which must have been around 1804, as their eldest child, Alexander, was baptised in 1805.

All of the children were born in Finnart. These are two of the baptismal records and the others probably are similar.

20th February 1805, Fortingall OPR
Alexander, son to John Stewart and Catherine Campbell in Finnart was baptised.

19th May 1821, Fortingall OPR
Donald, son to John Stewart and Catherine Campbell in Finnart was baptised.

In 1834 the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland gave the male heads of families, within the parish, the right to veto the landowner's appointment of a new minister if there was a majority objection. As a result the Kirk Sessions were instructed to list the male heads of families in each parish. In Fortingall parish John Stewart, teacher, was one of four family heads listed at Finnart between 1835 and 1837.

The 1841 census for Fortingall parish shows John Stewart and his family in Finnart on the south side of Loch Ranoch.

Dwelling Name Age Occupation Birthplace
Finnart John Stewart 60y schoolmaster Perthshire
Catherine Stewart 55y Perthshire
Ann Stewart 25y Perthshire
Donald Stewart 20y Perthshire
Jean McIntyre 5y Perthshire

John Stewart's wife Catherine died before the 1851 census, by which time he had moved to Muthill village, probably to be near his married daughter Ann.

Dwelling Name Occupation Related Status Age Birth-place
Muthill Village John Stewart retired teacher head widower 74y Rannoch
Grace McIntyre scholar g.dau u/m 14y Perth

As Grace McIntyre was a grand-daughter, it is most likely that the Jean McIntyre listed in the 1841 census also was a grand-daughter. This suggests that John Stewart had another daughter, older than Ann, who married a McIntyre around 1835, probably in Fortingall parish. However the identity of this daughter is unclear.

23rd May 1857, Muthill
John Stewart, a teacher and widower, died in Muthill village on 23rd May 1857 aged 80 years and was buried in Muthill churchyard. His parents were given as Allan Stewart, miller, and Margaret Cumming, both deceased. The informant was Alexander Gloag, his son-in-law.
