John Cumming and Mary McGrigor in Torrachruie

The Fortingall OPR baptisms shows that John Cumming and Mary McGrigor were living on the north side of Loch Rannoch at Torrachruie in the early 1750s. John Cumming may have been the brother of Janet Cumming who was living at Croftcarnach when she married in 1753. Croftcarnach was very close to Torrachruie and there are no other Cumming marriages nor baptisms associated with Croftcarnach.

The first possible baptism of a child for John Cumming and Mary McGrigor, is from a section of the Fortingall OPR which is in a very poor state, with part of the mother's name virtually illegible and the homestead in doubt.

21st September 1751, Fortingall OPR
(missing), daughter to John Cumming and Margaret (missing) was baptised.

The next two baptisms are both from 1752.

13th April 1752, Fortingall OPR
Christian, daughter to John Cumming and Margaret McGregor in Drumcastle was baptised.

24th May 1752, Fortingall OPR
Margaret, daughter to John Cumming and Margaret McGregor in Torchruie was baptised.

It is highly unlikely that these were twins baptised at different times as they were born in different settlements. The Torrachruie entry seems to be correct as there are subsequent baptisms at that location, so the Drumcastle entry looks suspect. There is no record of a John Cumming married to a Margaret McGregor in Drumcastle. As Drumcastle baptisms should have been recorded in the Logierait OPR, the Fortingall Session Clerk could have got the John Cumming from Drumcastle confused with the one from Torrachruie. Thus, it is possible that the Drumcastle entry should have read......

13th April 1752, Fortingall OPR
Christian, daughter to John Cumming and Elspeth McGregor in Drumcastle was baptised.

The next baptism has the mother's name as Mary, but as these were native Gaelic speakers the forename Margaret was sometimes written as Mary, Marjory or May.

9th July 1758, Fortingall OPR
Alexander, son to John Cumming and Mary McGrigor in Torrachruie was baptised.

There also is the strong possibility that there was a son Duncan born earlier than these records. He was living at Torrachruie when he married, would have been in his late twenties at that time, and had his first son baptised with the name of his father, John.

Alexander Robertson and Margaret Cumming in Perth

12th August 1791, Perth OPR
Contracted, Alexander Robertson, day labourer in Perth and Margaret Cumming in Turrichies (Torrachruie) in Rannoch in the parish of Fortingall, daughter of John Cumming, farmer there - Deacon Thomas Peddie. The persons before named were regularly proclaimed and married 26th August said year by Mr John Moncrieff, Missionary Minister of Kinloch Rannoch and Foss.

13th August 1791, Fortingall OPR
Alexander Robertson in Tulloch, Perth parish and Margaret Cumming in Torrachruie in this parish, entered their names to be proclaimed in order to marriage.

The couple appear to have had just one child, a daughter baptised as Elspith, 30th September 1792, in Perth.

-

Duncan Robertson and Elspit Cumming in Balintuim of Rannoch?

It is thought that this Elspeth Cumming was the Elizabeth Cumming who had her marriage banns with Duncan Robertson proclaimed on 1st October 1788 in Fortingall parish. However, the entry in the Fortingall OPR does not confirm this, as it just says that bride and groom were "both in this parish".

As far as is known Duncan Robertson and Elizabeth Cumming had only two daughters, born around 1789 and 1792, which sounds like an older bride, so it seems more likely that Duncan Robertson's wife was the daughter of John Cumming - unless new evidence shows otherwise.

There are no baptismal entries in any of the OPRs for their daughters, and the validity of their parentage stems from Elizabeth Robertson's death certificate of 1868.

Elizabeth Robertson, unmarried pauper and formerly a domestic servant, died at Drumcoiller of Rannoch on 25th April 1868, aged 76 years. Her parents were given as Duncan Robertson, labourer, and Elizabeth Cumming, both deceased. The informant was Janet Munro, her niece.

The information concerning the informant on the death certificate is crucial in showing that Janet Robertson was the sister of Elizabeth Robertson. This assertion is supported by the census returns for Fortingall parish, part of which was separated off as Kinloch Rannoch parish in 1861.

James Menzies and Janet Robertson in Urlar

14th February 1808, Fortingall OPR
James Menzies and Janet Robertson, both in this parish, entered their names (to be proclaimed in order to marriage).

The couple had eleven children over the next 20 years. Here are a few of the baptismal records which show the family in one general location but moving from farm to farm. James probably was working as a farm servant, saving money until he could tenant his own property - Urlar by 1841.

26th July 1808, Fortingall OPR

Janet, daughter to James Menzies and Janet Robertson in Dunacree (was baptised)

Croftcour, Dunskiag and Dunacree were all close to each other, west of Aberfeldy on the south side of the river Tay.

By the time of the 1841 census, James Menzies and his family were farming at Urlar, a few miles further south on the Urlar Burn. The family had been at Urlar from, at least, 1835. In 1834, the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland passed the Veto Act, removing the absolute right of landowners to appoint ministers to their parish. The Act gave male heads of families who were communicants with the parish the right to veto the appointment of a new minister if a majority of them objected. James Menzies tenant in Urlar is listed but states that he was "connected with the church of Fortingall but not communicating at the Parish Church". Aberfeldy would have been a much closer church to attend, but was in Dull parish not Fortingall parish.

John Munro and Janet Menzies in Balintuim of Rannoch

The 1841 census return has limited detail, such as family relationships, and the ages tended to be rounded down so that a 44 years old person might be recorded as bing only 40.

Janet Menzies was Elizabeth Robertson's neice, and married John Munro who lived nearby but there is no OPR entry for the marriage banns. The Civil Registration birth certificate of their son William, dated 20th March 1855, shows that they were married at Ballintuim in 1842.

On the birth certificate John Munro is described as a 43 year-old labourer, born at Mount Alexander (Dunalastair), and his wife Janet Menzies was 40 years old and had been born at Blairfettie, Glen Errochty. She does not have a baptismal record in the Blair Atholl OPR for that location. William was her 8th child and all eight were still alive in 1855.

Donald McGregor and Elizabeth Cumming in Innerhaddon

Elizabeth Stewart died in 1878, after the commencement of Civil Registration, so her parentage should have been straight-forward as her death certificate gives her parents as Donald Stewart, farmer and Margaret Cumming, both deceased. However, there is no entry of marriage banns for such a couple in any of the Perthshire OPRs, neither is there a baptismal record for Elizabeth Stewart herself. Obviously the parental names on the death certificate are inaccurate.

As Elizabeth Stewart was said to be aged 74 years when she died, she must have been born around 1804 and her age on census returns for 1871 and 1861 suggest, roughly, the same date. The census returns also state that she was born in Fortingall parish, and her marriage certificate give her residence in 1825 as Innerhaddon.

5th December 1825, Fortingall OPR
Donald McGregor and Elisabeth Stewart, both in Innerhaddon in this parish (married).

Assuming that her mother's surname is correct, as it is uncommon compared to Cameron, then the name of Margaret Cumming on the death certificate was written in error for Elizabeth Cumming. This theory is supported in two ways. All of the children of Donald Stewart and Elizabeth Cumming were born at Innerhaddon, where Elizabeth Stewart was living when she married. Secondly, although Donald Stewart and Elizabeth Cumming married 16th December 1804, the first baptism (for their daughter Jean) is dated 5th May 1809, nearly five year later with subsequent birth occuring every two or three years later. So the birth of Elizabeth would fit this sequence of events.

Donald McGregor and Elizabeth Stewart seem to have had only one child baptised - John, 21st August 1836, Fortingall OPR.

Donald McGregor may have died shortly after the birth of his son, as Donald's wife and son were living at Kinloch Rannoch with Elizabeth Stewart (i.e. Elizabeth Cumming, her mother) at the time of the 1841 census.

Donald McDougall and Mary Cumming in Milnavaddy and Drumcastle

30th May 1806, Fortingall
Donald McDougall at Milnavaddy and Mary Cumming at Drumcastle, parish of Logierait (were booked for marriage).

The use of 'at' rather than 'in' usually meant that this was not the person's usual residence. According to his son's death certificate, Donald McDougall was a meal miller. He may have been related to the McDougal family who were millers for Robert 'Ban' Robertson at the Mill of Invervack.

Mary Cumming's brother James was a weaver in East Drumcastle when he married Grizel Campbell in 1826. However this would be a very tenuous link, as he would have been only 13 years old when Mary married, unless his father had moved to Drumcastle with his wife and children.

The OPRs do not record the baptisms of any children but the civil registration of deaths, which commenced in 1855, shows that the couple had at least two children but did not get them formally baptised.

The 1841 Grace McDougall was employed as a female servant by her uncle Robert Cumming in Newbigging farm, close to Kincardine West.

At the time of the 1851 census Alexander McDougall and his sister were living at Balmore, a farm a few miles north-west of Dunalastair.

James Cumming was the son of James Cumming and Grizel Campbell in Tuchethill, Maderty. His father had died and the children were taken in by their relatives.

As the census records that both Alexander McDougall and his sister were born in Logierait parish, their family probably were living in Drumcastle at that time.

Alexander McDougall, unmarried saw-miller, died at Balmore, Rannoch, on 8th October 1863 aged 53 years. His parents were given as Donald McDougall, meal miller, and Mary Cumming, both deceased. The informant was Duncan McDiarmid, a joiner at Kinloch Rannoch.

The 1871 Grace McDougall was employed at Gaskan by Charles Robertson, as an unmarried general domestic servant. Her age was given as 48 years and her place of birth as Rannoch.

The 1881 census shows that Alexander's unmarried sister, Grace McDougall, was living alone at Balmore.

Grace McDougall, unmarried general servant, died at Kinloch Rannoch, on 4th January 1893 aged 72 years. Her parents were given as Donald McDougall, farmer, and Mary Cumming, both deceased. The informant was Helen Campbell, her cousin.

Helen Campbell, her cousin, probably was the daughter of Mary's sister Margaret who was married to Duncan Campbell in Kinloch Rannoch.

Duncan Cumming and Mary McOmish in Muthill

If Duncan Cumming did formally marry, and there is no entry in any OPR to confirm that he did, then he would have been relatively young, probably not more than 22 years old. His wife was the daughter of Duncan McComish and Elizabeth Millar who were in the parish of Blackford before moving to Muthill parish, where Mary was born 28th April 1793. So she would have been only 17 when they married. The surname of 'McComish' has a number of different spellings, such as McOmish and McAinsh.

The parish of Muthill is to the south of Crieff, so it is hard to explain why Duncan Cumming had moved to this area. Perhaps he was just looking for work.

The whereabouts of the family at the time of the 1841 census is unknown.

The 1851 Census Return shows just Robert Cumming living with his parents. His sister Christian, aged 18 years, was working closeby (2/10).

James Cumming and his wife were in Madderty area by 1829

The 1841 census shows the family living at Tuchethill farm, Madderty

Their son William was born at Madderty around 1848 according to the 1851 census, which also states that Grace Cumming was a widow. So James Cumming must have died between 1847 and 1851. After the death of her husband, Grace and her youngest child went to live with Grace's older sister, Elizabeth McGregor in Dull village in the house next to the manse. Grace's son John Cumming went to live with his uncle Robert Cumming, as shown in the 1851 census for Monzievaird and Strowan. James, the youngest son, went to live with Alexander McDougal and Grace McDougal at Balmore in Rannoch.

Elizabeth McGregor died in 1861 and her death certificate shows that the parents of Grace Cumming were Donald Campbell and Margaret Dewar (or Deor) who married in Dull parish, 28th January 1786.

Elizabeth McGregor, pauper and widow of Duncan McGregor, tailor, died at Dull (village) on 16th February 1861 aged 69 years. Her parents were given as Donald Campbell, weaver, and Margaret Dewar, both deceased. The informant was Grace Cumming, her sister, who signed with 'her mark'.

Grace Cumming, now aged 55 years, and her son William aged 12, had returned to Madderty by the time of the 1861 census. Grace was still there in 1871.

14th December 1823, Logierait OPR
Duncan Campbell, weaver in Drumcastle, Rannoch, and Margaret Cumming, daughter to Alexander Cumming, also in Drumcastle gave up their names for proclamation of marriage. Granted marriage lines.

7th March 1829, Fortingall OPR
Archibald, son to Duncan Campbell and Margaret Cumming (in) Clachglas, born 1st January, baptised 7th March.

Clachglas is shown on the 1st edition of the 6 inch O.S. map as being on the north shore of Loch Rannoch, close to Kinloch Rannoch. It appears to have been a single building with a small plot of ground for growing vegetables.

The 1841 census shows the family, probably at Clachglas.

Robert Cumming and Mary Crawford in Knockieston, Monzievaird and Strowan

It is most disappointing that the marriage entry in the Crieff OPR for 9th December 1838 merely gives the names of the two parties being married, providing no additional information.

Although their first child, David, was baptised in Crieff parish, 15th September 1839, by 1841 Robert Cumming and his family were living at Newbigging farm, close to Kincardine West. Perhaps they attended a Gaelic church in Crieff, instead of the local parish church.

Dwelling Name Age Occupation Birthplace
Newbigging Robert Cumming 35y farmer Perthshire
Mary Cumming* 3y Perthshire
David Cumming 1y Perthshire
Grace McDougal** 20y female servant Perthshire

* The '3-year-old Mary Cumming' is a clerical error for Robert's wife and the age should be 30 according to later census returns.

** Grace McDougal, the female servant, was the daughter of Robert's sister, Mary Cumming, and Donald McDougal.

The 1851 census for Monzievaird and Strowan (7/4) seems to name their farm as Upper Lochlane.

By 1861 the family had moved to Knockieston, a slightly larger adjacent farm. The Perthshire Ordnance Survey Name Book 1859-62 (volume 60, OS1/25/60/65) describes Knockieston as "a farm steading, dwelling house and offices, one story, slated and in good repair, property of the Right Honourable Lord Abercromby". It would seem that a James Cumming was living there at this time, as well as Robert Cumming. This James Cumming might have been the son of his deceased brother, James Cumming in Madderty. James Cumming jnr. died in 1861.

Robert Cumming, farmer married to May Crawford, died 20th April 1878 at Knockieston, parish of Monziecaurd and Strowan, aged 75 years. His parents were given as Alexander Cumming, dyker, and Mary Menzies, both deceased. The informant was his son David Cumming, living at 7 Clyde Street, Liverpool. (David is thought to have taken over the farm).

Duncan McGrigor and Janet Cumming in Torrachruie and Annat

11th March 1753, Fortingall OPR
Duncan McGrigor in Foss House and Janet Cumming in Croftcarnach, both in this parish were lawfully booked (in order to marriage)

Croftcarnach is not mentioned in any other Cumming marriage or baptism. It is presumed that Janet was the sister of John Cumming in adjacent Torrachruie, but she may have been living at Croftcarnach with her father.

The couple do not seem to have had any children for seven years after their marriage. Had Duncan McGrigor enlisted? Their first child appears to have been born at Torrachruie, before the family moved to Annat. This suggests that Duncan was not a tenant farmer.

22nd June 1760, Fortingall OPR
Janit, daughter to Duncan McGrigor and Janet Cumming in Torrachruie was baptised.

15th January 1764, Fortingall OPR
Ewan, son to Duncan McGrigor and Janet Cumming in Annat(?) was baptised.

In 'The McGregors of Roro', pages 242-243 (Glendiscovery.com) it is claimed that Duncan McGregor was a grandson of Donnacha-du na-Gealaiche (Duncan of the Moon), his father being John McGregor (Iain MacDhonacha dhu, eldest son by Duncan's second wife). John McGregor lived at Torrachruie and was married to a daughter of Robertson of Clachan by whom he had five sons and several daughters. The eldest son was Duncan, born around 1705. Duncan was married firstly to Grace Menzies in 1744, by whom he had one son, John. Secondly, he married Janet Cumming in 1752, by whom he had three sons (Donald, Alexander and Hugh) and one daughter. Alexander McGregor was said to have married Janet Robertson from Glenerrochty and had 2 sons. John born 1790 and Duncan born 1802, and several daughters.

The following OPR entries seem to relate to the couple.

20th January 1792, Blair Atholl OPR
Alexander McGregor in Croftcarnach, Fortingall parish, and Janet Robertson in Tulloch (of Glenerrochty), married.

There is a matching entry in the Fortingall OPR. The family settled at Croft of Auchleeks (Croftcarnach) and four children were baptised according to the Blair Atholl OPR: Marjory, 25th December 1796; Jannet, 11th May 1801; Duncan, 4th November 1804; and Christian, 17th September 1807.

Alexander Munro, gardener at Dunalastair

John Munro was the son of Alexander Munro, gardener at Dunalastair Tower-house which was owned by George Duncan Robertson, 18th Chief of Clan Donnachaidh. John Munro's mother was Mary McDonald. A number of the family were buried in the small enclosure at Dunalastair (St Luke's) where there is a weather worn memorial stone which still has some details legible.
