Genealogical Record of a branch of the Stewart Clan commencing with Donald and Janet Stewart of Balhastle, Loch Tummel, Parish of Blair Athol, Scotland, to the year 1912, being a period of about two hundred years.

(Generation 2) THEIR CHILDREN

The entries in the Old Parish Records for Blair Atholl are as follows:

Donald Stewart in Uchdnanetaig and Janet Stewart in Balintepaill of Fincastle, Parish of Dull were married July 17th 1754

1760
Donald Stewart in Uchdnanetaig and Janet Stewart his wife had a child born September 26th, baptised 28th called Robert

Robert married Janet Robertson of Balcastle in 1791 and this is recorded in the Blair Atholl OPR.

Robert Stewart and Janet Robertson both in Balcastle of Borenich married November 25th 1791

Although Ross's Genealogy of the Stewarts of Balhastle only mentions 'Deacon' Robert and his brother Donald 'Robert' Stewart of Lochaber, Nova Scotia, there are another four children recorded in the Blair Atholl OPR.

1792
Robert Stewart in Balcastle and Janet Robertson his wife had a child born 17th and baptised 21st October named Donald

1794
Robert Stewart in Balcastle and Janet Robertson his wife had a child born 6th and baptised 9th March named Helen.

1795
Robert Stewart in Balcastle and Jannet Robertson his wife had a child baptised 27th December named Alexander.

1798
Robert, son to Robert Stewart and Jannet Robertson in Bailchastle born 17th May and baptised 20th.

1807
Janet, lawful daughter to Robert Stewart and Janet Robertson his spouse in Bailchastle born 4th November and baptised 9th.

1810
John, lawful son to Robert Stewart and Janet Robertson his spouse in Bailechastel born 8th December and baptised 12th.

In addition to these children there is good reason to believe that Robert Stewart and Janet Robertson also had a daughter called Elizabeth.

The register of marriages for Blair Atholl shows that Elizabeth Stewart of Balcastle married Donald McDonald of Balnabruach on 8th December 1833. From the census returns and other documents she would appear to have been born between 1802 and 1805. Elizabeth died at Dalriach, Moulin, on 25th December 1890, and her death certificate gives her parents as Robert Stewart and Janet Stewart. This error, in the maiden name of her mother, also occurred on the death certificate of her sister Janet Stewart, or Dow, who died six years later on 2nd May 1896.

A word of caution. The Betty Stewart daughter of Robert Stewart and Janet Robertson who was baptised in Blair Atholl parish on 21st October 1801, is not the same person as this is a Grennich birth. A lot of confusion exists over the children of Robert Stewart and Janet Robertson, as there were two couples with these names living in Strathtummel at this time - one couple lived in Balcastle and the other couple lived in Grennich. If in doubt, consult the "Stewart Births in Borenich" page on this web-site.

The eldest son, Donald, married Helen (or Ellen, as she was known) McDonald of Chamberbane on 3rd August 1823. They had two sons, Alexander and John, born at Balcastle before they emigrated to Canada in 1833. After settling in North Lochaber, their daughter Ellen was born. Donald died in 1855 and Helen his wife died in 1883. For more details see 'Donald Robert Stewart of Lochaber, Nova Scotia' in the Record Room.

Helen may be the Helen Stewart of Balcastle who married Donald Stewart of Uchdnanetaig on 19th December 1814 at Blair Atholl.

Alexander possibly died in infancy as nothing is known about him.

Their son, Robert, married Christian (Christy) Stewart of Chamberbane on 6th May 1826. They had three children, Robert, Janet and John, who were born at Balcastle before they emigrated to Canada in 1833. They also settled in North Lochaber, and had three more children, Cecelia, Donald and Christie. 'Deacon' Robert Stewart died 22nd July 1873 and is buried in North Lochaber, Antigonish, Nova Scotia. His wife 'Christy' Stewart died 6th December 1879 and is also buried in North Lochaber. For more details see 'Deacon Robert Stewart of Lochaber, Nova Scotia' in the Record Room.

Janet married John Dow of Balnabodach on 17th December 1837. They had only one child, Robert who has born in 1838 and eventually took over the farm at Balnabodach. Janet died on 2nd May 1896 and is probably buried at Struan. Her death certificate gives her parents as Robert Stewart and Janet Stewart, but this is in error for Janet Robertson.

The youngest son, John "Bonnety" Stewart, married Ann Stewart of Bohally on 4th February 1838. After the death of his father, Robert, he and his family moved to Bankfoot. For more details see 'John "Bonnety" Stewart of Balcastle and Bankfoot' in the Record Room.
