Alexander Moon and Jannet McCuich in Boat of Cluny (Dull, 31st March 1726)

Dull OPR, 31st March 1726
Alexander Moon and Janet McCuloch, both in the parish of Dull, were married. Gilbert Wallace and John McCuloch, witnesses.

The following entry in the Dull OPR is not easy to decipher but may be this family:

Dull OPR, 24th July 1728
John, son to Alexander Moon and Jannet McDod? in Nether Derguly (Derculich?) was baptised. Alexander Nicolson and James Stewart, witnesses.

In the following baptismal entry Boat of Cluny is close to Derculich:

Dull OPR, 13th October 1730
Jonet, daughter to Alexander Moon and Jannet McCluich in Boat of Cluny, John McCluich there, being sponsor in her father's absence was baptised. Thomas Stewart and Donald McKercher, witnesses.

The following marriage entry in Edinburgh appears to be that of Janet. If she was 38 when she married it might explain why there were no children from the marriage:

Edinburgh OPR, 5th June 1768
William Donaldson, journeyman shoemaker, and Janet Moon, daughter to deceased Alexander Moon, farmer in the parish of Logierait, now both in Lady Yesters Kirk parish (married).

As he does not appear in the 1705 List of Fencible Men, Alexander must have been born after 1689, but which man was his father - John Moon in Tulloch?

Donald Robertson, alias French, in Little Lude and Isabel Moon in Tomvulin (Blair Atholl, 21st November 1733)

Although it was not until November 1743 that marriages were properly recorded in Blair Atholl parish, there are a few proclamations made between October 1733 and December 1734 which includes one for Donald Robertson and Isabel Moon.

Blair Atholl OPR, 21st November 1733
Donald Robertson in Little Lude and Isabel Moon in Tomvulin proclaimed.

There seem to have been at least four Robertson children from this marriage. The first two were born at Tombmhuillin (Tomvulin), and the last two were born at Tomkindrochit.

Katharine Robertson, 29th January 1744;
Elspeth Robertson, 13th January 1747;
James Robertson, 5th June 1749;
Isobel Robertson, 22nd November 1751

Katharine was born ten years after the marriage and there may have been several children born before her, so this does not assist when trying to establish her parentage. It only can be assumed that she was born around 1710.

Alexander Moon and Margaret Stewart in Aldclune

This possible marriage arises from the baptism of Margaret Moon, 7th January 1776, in the Blair Atholl OPR. Strangely, there is no trace of such a marriage in this, or any other parish, yet there is no indication that Margaret was illegitimate.

One explanation would be that there has been a clerical error by the registrar. Alexander Menzies and Margaret Stewart in Aldclune have the baptisms of three children recorded in the Blair Atholl OPR: Jean, 24th March 1769; Katharine, 8th June 1772; and Isabel, 30th December 1781.

-

James Douglas and Jean Moon in Dunkeld parish (Dunkeld, 29th September 1792)

Dunkeld OPR, 29th September 1792
James Douglas and Jean Moon (married).

The Dunkeld OPR merely gives the names of the two parties without reference to where they were living, so tracing Jean's parentage is difficult. Only recorded baptism of a Jean Moon was in Errol but cannot be the same person as the she married in Errol at about the same time.

Jean probably was in her mid to late twenties when she married, so born 1767-1771. It is quite likely that she was born in Blair Atholl parish and was employed in Dunkeld by the Duke of Atholl.
