Births and Baptisms in Blair Atholl Parish (1722)

The following births and baptisms have been extracted from the Old Parish Records for Blair Atholl with the greatest care. However, it is always worth consulting the original documents which are available on-line at the 'Scotland's People' web-site.

The entries shown in bold do appear in the Blair Atholl OPR, but are missing from the IGI database.

There were a number of families which had alternative names, or used an alias, and they are not always apparent when using the IGI database. These include: Dow (Calmanach, McColman, McOlman); Lamond/Lamont (McGilliwie, McGillivie); McIntosh (Cattanach); McDonald (Caanich, Caldel, Mannich, McGillandris, McHendras, McLauchlane).

In other cases the IGI database shows a name which was abbreviated in the OPR, but does not recognise the correct name. These have been added in (parenthesis) by the editor. For example: Rotson is an abbreviation for (Robertson); Stew. (Stewart); Ferg. (Fergusson); etc.

In most cases, the names of homesteads have been entered using a standardised spelling derived from the 1^st edition of the Ordnance Survey (1867), rather than the anglecised version of the spoken Gaelic as this is extremely variable and can be confusing. For example "Balinteapail" and "Chapelton" both refer to Balchapel. It also allows the Gazetteer to be more easily used. Some places, such as Struan, Calvine, Trinafour and Blairfettie, are always given in their present form, to help those less famliar with the parish to find locations on current maps.

Illegitimate birth are given in italics with the dwelling place being that of the alleged father. The dwelling place of the mother is given together with her name.

A second entry, further on in the OPR, seems to provide additional information about this birth, but is indistinct in parts.

"Robert son of Patrick Stewart, Little Lude and Marjory Robertson (daughter ?) to Donald Robertson, brother (....) to Faskeilly."

This seems to relate to Donald Robertson in Croftmore, brother of Alexander Robertson, 7th of Faskally, who married Marjory Robertson and had four children: Robert; Isabell; Marjory; and Mary.
